I don't know about planned availability in the Chicago area, but I can pass on some information an Ameritech rep. just gave me regarding service in Ann Arbor and surrounding cities. I also have a question which hopefully someone who follows this group can shed some light on. Ameritech does offer 1Mbps down/128kbps up ADSL on several "islands" in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area. The installation and hardware fee is $150 and the monthly fee (including the line and their Internet service) is $50. They require that customers be within 7700 air feet of the CO, but have had success with customers up to 10000 air feet away. The only OSs they support are Win95/Win98. They do not support WinNT, which I run. (An obvious alternative is to setup a Win95 proxy server, which I am considering.) They suggested that I might be able to get it to work with NT, but they do not support it and told me that they have many reports from customers who are unable to get it to work due to driver incompatibilities. I would like to hear from anyone who has gotten Ameritech's ADSL to work under NT, or who has tried and concluded it cannot be done. Regarding ISDN from Ameritech (sorry that this is somewhat off topic)... I had a long series of problems with this service at my former residence in Milwaukee. On the other hand, two people I know in that area have had good luck with ISDN and I have had good luck with it at my place of business. Another colleague in the Milwaukee area has had problems similar to mine. That's 60% satisfaction in a small sample, FWIW. Other high speed data options in the Ann Arbor area? MediaOne cable modems. Inexpensive, but 1 way (upstream data is dial-up) and, again, not WinNT compatible. -- Eric Durant -- http://www.edurant.com/ Matt Michaels wrote: > Lord Vader wrote in message <6r5fuc$is5$1@birch.prod.itd.earthlink.net>... > >From what I have been hearing Ameritechs ADSL service sucks.
